The Hidden Way

This poem expresses a persistent theme in my life and Christian walk–always trying, always failing to make my own way, ever believing it was a divine charge.

The way is hard beneath the load
And kicking hard against the goad
Alluring is the broader road
To Abaddon’s cruel end

Keep pressing on ‘til break of day
And mend the cracks in jars of clay
For each must blaze his lonely way
To clamber and ascend

Bright morning shall redeem the strain
Just one more climb the peak to gain
Through sunless age the same refrain
The failure to transcend

Keep walking crawling do not faint
Though not a mile escapes the taint
The gnat will always find wet paint
Delight cannot contend

Yet there is another way
Where no mortal art may reach
A mystery of seismic weight
Lies just beyond the breach

Man’s ephemeral vital frame
By spider silk poised o’er the flame
Concealed safely in the power
Of an indestructible life

Let him drown the shrieks of accusation
The wails of deep despair
Let the triumph of a new refrain
Electrify the air

Not my will but thine be done
Not my race but thine to run
Not my works but thine be wrought
Not mine ends but thine be sought
Not my gifts but thine to give
Not my life but thine to live

So leave the errant way to rot
And let the jackals have the lot
Christ died not to salvage flesh
Let it be crucified!

He Is Risen!

On surveying the devastated Germany following WWII, the chancellor remarked to Billy Graham:

Mr. Graham, what is the most important thing in the world? The resurrection of Jesus Christ. If Jesus Christ is alive, then there is hope for the world. If Jesus Christ is in the grave, then I don’t see the slightest glimmer of hope on the horizon.

Chancellor of West Germany Konrad Adenauer [source]

As He did for Abraham on Mt. Moriah, God provided the sacrifice in substitution for our sons and daughters. As He commanded Moses, He then provided in fullness the spotless Passover Lamb. The veil was torn, never to be mended. The Earth shook, never to stop its quaking.

One day for certain, soon, I pray,
a new crescendo will display
the unveiled glory long hidden away.
Even as He walked the Earth
in keeping with His lowly birth
then flesh and dust concealed his worth.
On that day will naught be veiled
though nations will have against Him railed
Man's machinations will have failed
and righteousness will flood the land
bursting forth from nail-scarred hand
fulfilling all which He had planned:
New heavens, new Earth, Christ glorified in command.
